Here’s a comprehensive guide to Bali’s recently introduced tourist tax, a measure that’s been capturing attention as it begins to affect travelers. Bali, a perennial favorite among Australian tourists, is implementing a $15 AUD charge for visitors.

The initiative, a “tourist tax,” is expected to generate substantial revenue annually for the Indonesian province. The funds collected are earmarked for projects aimed at preserving the environment and local culture.

Before you pack your bags, here’s what you should know.

Understanding Bali’s 2024 Arrival Tax
Bali has introduced an arrival tax, referred to as the tourist levy, set at IDR 150,000, approximately $15 AUD.

Payment options include credit cards, and travelers are required to provide their name, email, and passport information on the application website.
Bali’s officials recommend obtaining the levy in advance and bringing a receipt to expedite your entry process.

The funds from this levy are designated for initiatives to conserve Balinese culture, traditions, arts, and environmental integrity. The government promises ongoing efforts to enhance service quality and sustain the local heritage and environment.

Do Australians Need a Visa for Bali?
Yes, Australian tourists need a visa for Bali, separate from the tourist tax.

This visa, known as a B1 visa, is valid for 30 days and can be extended for an additional month. Priced at just under $50 AUD (Rp500,000), it’s available upon arrival or via an online application for an e-Visa on Arrival (e-VOA) at least 14 days before your trip.

Passport Validity for International Travel
When planning international travel, ensure your passport has at least six months of validity remaining.

For the e-VOA, it’s advised to submit your application no less than 48 hours before departure to avoid delays, as visas are not issued immediately. Applications should be made through the official Indonesian website, including a passport photo and the necessary fee.
